1/The Rise Of PRE FALL

New age minimalism, grown-up glamour, and tartan — just some of the reasons why pre-fall 2013 is so hot right now.

Picture a floor length fur coat. Luxurious, expensive, rare and most importantly impractical (unless you’re a Russian baroness lounging in her mountain top chalet). Now imagine the same fur coat in a hip-skimming peplum shape. Or as a leather bomber with fur trimmings. So model-off-duty, so chic and so wearable. Welcome to the pre-fall update.

While we gape at runway trends, few of us can actually pull off an East European aristocratic look. Which is why pre-collections step in to help channel the best of OTT runway looks into our everyday wardrobe. The fashion that holds sway in the ‘season between seasons’ is our go-to for new season updates. Trends we spot at pre-fall are the ones to look out for in Autumn/Winter 2013.

Coats

This month we're drowning under an explosion of coats - from Marni's metallics with fur trimmings, to Mad Men-inspired pastels at Jonathan Saunders. Louis Vuitton's version combined two hot fall trends, creating a traffic-stopping red coat .

Minimalism

While OTT is always something that sets our hearts aflutter; there’s definitely something refreshing about new minimalism - Alexander Wang for Balenciaga focused on tailoring and structure. Half-and-half was the mantra at Jean Paul Gaultier; with the couturier going graphic yet minimal.

Suits

Even classic tailoring didn’t escape without a revamp. Suits were aplenty from classic trouser suits at Dior and Bottega Veneta, to the more experimental skirt suits at Gucci and Theory by Helmut Lang.

Red

Wallflowers take note - this season is not for the faint hearted. Red in all its shades set the collections ablaze. Key looks included Balmain’s gold and red baroque-esque suit and Just Cavalli’s dual-toned sweater dress.

Grown-Up Glamour

And if all else fails, you can always turn to classic, grown-up glamour with Jason Wu, Michael Kors and Emilio Pucci's collections. Structured pencil skirts, sculpted ruffles and lace are bound to get you attention and make a formidable style statement.

Knits

If weaves and knits are more your shtick, then revel in the tartan, gingham and Fair Isle accents present all across. Alexander McQueen, always a keen supporter of Scottish plaid, celebrated this longtime passion with carefully constructed, ultra modern looks. Alexander Wang's bespoke line gave us a sporty version of the Scottish Fair Isle knit, paired with signature slouchy trousers. 2/“Rome, Cara & Fendi: The three passions in my photographs”.
